I caught a whiff of her fragrance before I saw her beautiful petals that evening in my friend's garden. The air was still, and her heady scent wafted with nearly-visible wiggly lines toward me.

It's been about seven weeks since I've painted a rose. Winter has stepped in between me and my passion for whorled petals. But I saw some in the store this morning and decided to venture into the land of fragrant pinkness, no matter what was falling from the sky.

Fleshy Curves

I tucked my pastels away and put my rose coloured glasses back on for this one. It had been a while since I slathered oily paint against the even grain of canvas.  My last rose was shades of grey.  The one before her was squiggled with the tips of my pastels. Tonight I wanted to inhale the fragrance of a live rose, feel her supple petals against my lips and enjoy the range of colours as her fleshy curves rounded in and out of the light.

I loved painting her.

Receptive

Although, seemingly, this rose did nothing but sit in front of me tonight, she was, in fact, receptive to all of my senses — being adored through sight, being smelled, being touched, and yes, even being tasted.  As my last painting of the year, she was thoroughly enjoyed.

I purchased seven canvases from a particular manufacturer this week. When I blocked in this rose today, I stopped painting and went back to the store to buy twenty-eight more. The surface is so receptive to paint, the way I love to apply it. Painting this rose was a joyful experience!  I look forward to many more evenings like this ... with great joy!

Kiss Me!

Along the picket fence, where the white roses I like to paint grow, is a bush of pink roses.  They have sweet nubs of petals in their centers that linger, puckered for a kiss, before becoming full blown. I happened upon this one this week.

It's been a while since I've painted a rose, but I had a request to, so here she is. I also have several new ones auditioning. The crop along the picket fence has been splendid in the past few weeks, so I've taken lots of photos.

Sunlit

Sister of the roses from my last two posts, and nothing like either of her siblings, this demure beauty is sunlit and golden from within.

I have painted all three roses with my masonry sponges.  I adore swirling color onto canvas with my snippets of sponge.  I did, however, use a brush to do finishing details on them, because of the smallish size of the canvas.

A Single Rose

"A Single Rose"

I entered the rose garden late in the day, late in the month of June.  In the humidity, the fragrance draped over petal and bud like a veil.  There she bobbed on her rigid stem, fanning herself with leaves like fans.

Finally, I made time to paint a larger rose! I sponged on the initial color then brushed on the subtleties with my beloved Rosemary & Co. brushes.  It had been a long time since I've sponged color on a canvas.  The daily paintings are small, and my sponges are larger than many sections that need to be filled.  Now I want to make a big one... like three by three feet!  I love to paint that large.  Whew! But they all look the same size when you see them online... so stop by to see them in real life.

Love to all of you who sent your comments about my dad's death. Thank you so much.
