In some parts of the country there are flowers blooming already — wild flowers, not in a conservatory, not in a clay pot or wrapped in a clear plastic sleeve from the grocery store. Spring is in full bloom in some parts of the country, not here, but somewhere.  Oh, to be where there are blooming things. . .

I grew up where a plant of this name was a rusty orange and not particularly … pretty. I find this species of the genus quite fetching. I wonder if it has a fragrance as divine as its color?

I caught a whiff of her fragrance before I saw her beautiful petals that evening in my friend's garden. The air was still, and her heady scent wafted with nearly-visible wiggly lines toward me.

It's been about seven weeks since I've painted a rose. Winter has stepped in between me and my passion for whorled petals. But I saw some in the store this morning and decided to venture into the land of fragrant pinkness, no matter what was falling from the sky.

I resurrected a blah painting, this one, today when I did a demo for a friend to show him my dry glazing technique.  It's something I devised to suit my own needs, and it turns out to be innovative and pretty darn effective.  I will be teaching this technique in a workshop in Virginia late in the Spring in The Red Queen Gallery where I'm represented.

Resurrecting paintings that fall flat, or come up short will be the theme of my workshop. I'll let you know when it is scheduled and where.

Begonias

Acrylic on canvas panel

I haven't had begonias on my front porch in years, but I came across this photo of when I did, so I painted it. I did this one a year or so ago, but hadn't posted it.  I may paint her over again, in oil this time.  She was fun, and I've learned so much since.

I love to paint light coloured flowers with dark backgrounds. It makes the blossom seem really important. And when you look this good, why not totally become the star?

Peony Swirl

Spring was just beginning when I found this blossom in a neighbor's yard. I photographed her and her buds and placed them on a decorative background.

I adorned many a wall with flowers like this one when I painted murals throughout Chicagoland. It's acrylic, I painted only in acrylic in those days.

Thank you for looking today. I appreciate it.
