Purple Haze

"Purple Haze"
8" x 10"
Oil on canvas panel
Two ginkgo leaves tumbled across the path where I found a maple leaf the other day.  They tumbled because they had withered and curled. I'd only seen these leaves flat and sprinkled like gold coins spilled from a parking meter.  I brought them in and drew them before they curled into cocoons or spooned like lovers.  The purple haze is a glazed complement to the golden leaves, and placed on another of my textured backgrounds.

Impressions

"Impressions"
8" x 10"
Oil on hardboard
A photo of these leaves was sent to me by a friend who knows I like color, nature, and a challenge.  These WERE challenging. Someone suggested I use "puff paint" to tackle all the little bumps on the surface of the leaves.

It's a very impressionistic rendering of the subject.  To do this justice I should have spent a week painting it... but I barely have an evening!

Thank you my friend for letting me use your lovely photo of leaves.

Leaf Me Alone

"Leaf Me Alone"
4" x 7"
Watercolor on paper
I collect old linens and lace. This piece was a collar from a resale shop.  I knew it would probably not find a home as a collar again, what with the green needlework, so I bought it to use exactly as you see it here.

We're in a drought here in Illinois. Leaves are falling like it's autumn.  The pepper was garnish on a salad from the other day.  It seemed like a decent way to recycle an odd collection of items.

It Feels Like—Home

"It Feels Like-Home"
12" x 12"
Oil on wrapped canvas

I've been thinking about water lilies, but my thoughts have migrated to the under-side of the pad. What goes on under there? Is there a small universe, a microcosm to which we dry folks are not privy?  Does it feel like—home to creatures we never see?

I've wanted to paint from this photo for a while, but hadn't chosen a blue or a palette of greens.  Prussian, Viridian and cadmium yellows did the trick. Oh, and I sponged on the blue.

Thanks for visiting today.

Kiss

"Kiss"
8" x 8"
Oil on hardboard
The center buds of a succulent plant are as kissable as lips.  I'm drawn to their chubby roundness. I also like that they flatten into their svelte adult leaves without an in-between stage.

Here is my second low key painting on this textured hardboard.  Scanning her was the only solution to the issues with glare.  I had her in my courtyard, on the fence, against the house, on the porch and on a windowsill.  Not to mention all the usual indoor places.  Kissable as she is, this gal did not want to be photographed!

Thank you for looking in on me today.
