Trout Stream and Spotted Gum

"Trout Stream and Spotted Gum"

I have it on good authority that this is a trout stream and by the shape of the cluster of trees to the right they are Spotted Gum Trees — Eucalyptus Maculata. This eucalyptus is native to the eastern side of its country and is densely crowned, fast growing and has smooth bark.

I didn't feel like executing a Zentangle heart today, so this little landscape is my weekend offering.

Slipping Into Old Patterns

"Slipping Into Old Patterns"
6" x 6"
Graphite on paper

The title seemed like a fitting one, so soon after the new year, what with mid January around the corner.  I'm sure a lot of us have slipped into old patterns as resolutions have gone by the wayside. No biggie. Tomorrow's another day.

I had time on Saturday to draw while I was waiting. I am not trained in portraiture, but wanted to make an attempt at it, so instead of making a serious stab, I opted for whimsy. It occupied my time and gave me pleasure, too.

Straight From The Heart

"Straight From The Heart"
6" x 6"
Ink on paper
I used mostly straight lines in my heart this week. I also used an ink pen with graphite for shadows. The problem with ink is there's no fixing a wiggle, or a momentary lapse of memory when using permanent black on pristine paper. So here's my offering, in keeping with my Saturday heart gig.

You Gotta Have Heart

"You Gotta Have Heart"
6" x 6"
Graphite on paper
In keeping with my other two Zentangle drawings, here is another heart. I've used different patterns to fill in the same basic shape. I have nothing in mind when I begin, except that it will be drawn in a square format, a heart and done in a soft graphite pencil so I can smear shadows where I want them.

Meg's Leg

"Meg's Leg"
8" x 8"
Graphite on paper
Meg was a model in the life drawing session I'm taking in an art center near where I live.  Even though the pose was comfortable for Meg, the only thing I really nailed was her left leg.

When the opportunity presented itself, I saw the merit in attending the open studio, without an instructor. I've never done this before. I'm entirely new to drawing the figure from life. I wasn't classically trained. At this late stage of my life I'm trying the things I missed when I pursued chemistry rather than art.
