Auroral Ribbons

Ribbons circled the celestial orb in a galactic attempt at gift wrapping her. Moments later something burst — spewing particles into the atmosphere like so much confetti.

This was painted on the same day as the other Auroral piece, using the same palette of colors, but what a different outcome!

This is how my brain functioned today as I applied paint to a black canvas. Oh, my, I didn't know this is how those thoughts would look! But now you do, too.

The color is finally pretty true. I used Prussian blue and cadmium lemon to make the green. I like that the blue photographs as blue and not various shades of purple.

Here is another of revelation of what's going on in my brain. I just paint these. They emerge. Develop. Evolve as my brush drags across the canvas. I have no explanation for them. I just do them.

Once again, however, what appears to be blue here would be categorized more as purple in my mind. If you are considering buying it, it's not a BLUE painting.

Split Synapses

I revisited the synapse theme today, but in a different palette of colors. I'm using a split complement of blue violet, yellow green and yellow orange. The mixing of the colors as my brush flowed from one place to another gave me what appears to be a russet.

It's not my favorite palette, but I tried working outside my comfort zone. I would have preferred reds and oranges with my violet, but as I said, it was a challenge.  I limited my palette for tomorrow's post. Very limited!

The blues vary in this piece from Prussian to cobalt to ultramarine and then violets and purples galore. They are not reproducing accurately in the photo, as it's more limited than the eye in categorizing colors.

I have a few more canvases to cover in this subject matter, but it will be a few days before I can get to them.  I'm building a new website currently, too. I'll announce when it's ready to be unveiled. Nothing new has been added to it for almost two years. Then I'll freshen my blog, too.

Celestial Mid-tones

Here is my third offering in my celestial series. I'm thoroughly enjoying the freedom of playing with color and line with the underlying concept of outer space.

I'll be making another one tomorrow. Perhaps using a different palette altogether.  But it will be grounded in black, as the others have been.

Celestial Overtones

"Celestial Overtones"

I had been drawing a huge intricate canvas of about 60 rusted wagon wheels when I realized I didn't want to paint them. I wanted to paint something tempestuous, passionate and wild. So I looked at some photos from the Hubble and closed my computer and made my own version of what it looks like "out there."

This was a profoundly satisfying painting to produce.  I did it in one sitting tonight. I figured out the process of making these marks with a Princeton brush and the tip of one of my fingers and had my way with the canvas.  I'd love to make more like this one.
