See the Light!

"See the Light!"
5" x 12"
Oil on Hardboard
Mama Cass Elliot sang "...the darkest hour is just before dawn." What she implied is it gets a lot brighter after all that darkness. Come on now, let's get out of the winter funk.  Soon it'll be white instead of sepia, and our eyes will be filled with light again.  These grey days are just -- so -- hard.

I'm talking to myself.  I needed a pep talk, and who better to deliver it than the person who knows exactly what it's about.  The person who can get to the heart of the matter.  Moi.

Dawn Over the Lake

"Dawn Over the Lake"
8" x 10"
Oil on canvas panel
Morning crept in as usual; colourful, radiant and mystical, with no apparent sign of turmoil. Yet some had been brewing off shore, so very far away. How strange to hear of it, when it was so beautiful here.

Lake Michigan is such a lovely place to see dawn. I'm glad I live near enough to her shores to enjoy the show on occasion.

Sandy's Red Warning

"Sandy's Red Warning"
5" x 12"
Oil on hardboard
My daughter sent me a photo of the sky over western New Hampshire the morning Sandy hit. Someone she knows took the photo and sent it to her.  This testifies to the first line of the poem I quoted the other day...  "Red sky in morning, Sailors take warning."  It's graphic enough for me!

While I work on my commission piece here's something different to look at. I'll post more of The Maroon Bells tomorrow.

Happy Thanksgiving to those of you who celebrate it today.  I'm thankful for all of you who come to this place to see my art.

Watery Dawn

"Watery Dawn"
5" x 12"
Oil on hardboard
Dawn lifts her silky veil to reveal the blush of a new day. Doze a few moments too long and you'll miss her show altogether. Best begin sipping your coffee in the darkest hour... and wait. It'll be worth your while.

When I had the panel cut for my commission piece, I asked that the rest of the board be cut into some different shapes and sizes. I've gessoed dozens of new panels to explore some familiar subjects in new formats.

About To...

"About To..."
6" x 6"
Oil on hardboard
I begin these sky paintings with every intention of making a sunrise or a sunset, but when I get to the end there are nights that I don't know whether I've made the end of one day or the beginning of another.  It's like what's going on with my friend who is on an adventure in Madrid for a couple of weeks.  He is about to wake up while I type this, and I'm about to go to sleep.

Goodnight and good morning.

Rising On the Chanticleer Bay

"Rising On the Chanticleer Bay"
6" x6"
Oil on hardboard
The red-orange of the rising sun took on a rooster-red glow the morning I wakened to see it for myself.  The Chanticleer Bay was named for its glorious sunrises, but they didn't bode well for the residents. Red sky come morning... take it as warning.

Another sky while I sort out my... paints.

Bleeding Heart

"Bleeding Heart"
6" x 6"
Oil on hardboard
The sun rose that morning with more fanfare than the day warranted.  It bled all over the horizon, leaking onto the coastal waters and even tinting a rock or two.  Nobody even saw the orb responsible for this much drama.

Another sky while my life gets sorted. Or is it sordid?  Either way, you get sky.  :-)

Rising From the Depths

"Rising From the Depths"
6" x 6"
Oil on hardboard
Morning is so worth witnessing when there's a place to watch the sun rise from the depths of her nighttime hiding place. She brings with her such dandy colors and patterns and tosses them into the air with reckless abandon.

Sky, sky sky.  Does she know how to paint anything else?   Yes, and she's doing it behind your back.  Wait a few more days and you'll see.  Yikes, I hope so, anyway.

Sunrise Waves

"Sunrise Waves"
6" x 6"
Oil on hardboard
Long, tongue-like waves licked their way toward shore, some donning morning's light, others determined to drag night along as long as possible.

A sunrise is my warm up this time.  I bought more of these panels over the weekend so I can continue this little passion for a while longer. I'm figuring out how to paint that blue stuff that changes color and shape over my head.

Frosty Morning

"Frosty Morning"
8" x 10"
Oil on hardboard
It was November.  Frost had chilled autumn's remaining foliage with her prickling needles. Then Morning showed up with her heat lamp to thaw Frost's crystalline web.

Morning skies are so much more interesting than the ones we see at noon.  I'm enjoying morning a lot more now that I am painting sky without fear.

Good Morning

"Good Morning"
6" x 6"
Oil on hardboard
"Good morning my love, come see the sunrise. I'm glad you're waking up to watch it with me.  I wasn't going to waken you, but now that you're... honey?  My darling?  It's okay, we can watch the sunset tonight, instead."

I enjoy making these small sky paintings.  They give me satisfaction and joy to be able to produce them from passion within.

A New Day

"A New Day"
6" x 6"
Oil on hardboard
It's a new day, ripe with opportunities to come to clarity and heal.  Would that it were as simple as dissipating a cloud cover to whisk away our woes.

Sky paintings are therapeutic for me. I respond spontaneously to how the paint moves on the ground, be it canvas or board.  Small ones are often warmups for a more detailed painting.

Sheep in the Meadow

"Sheep in the Meadow"
6" x 6"
Oil on hardboard
Morning is not one of my favorite times. It occurs too early for my body's clock, but I love the colors of morning. I've peeked at them from behind my curtains, and remembered how they smear the sky like cream cheese on a bagel, but with pink, blue, peach and gold.

I'm testing a stack of Ampersand hardboard.  I have about a dozen panels to use.  I painted the sky with a light ground of white, then flipped color around with my brush and then dusted them lightly with a soft mop brush. I did the same with each little field and stream.  Soft...

Thank you for wandering by today.
