I'm once again in love with succulents. Like roses, their petals whorl around a center and flail like outstretched arms or a "full circle skirt" from my youth. Did you ever twirl round and round in one of those?  I'm enjoying the variation in color, the edges and the complexity of this subject matter.

Succulents and Cabbage

A friend sent me a photo of her succulent garden, She said she planted the cabbage with them in order to have some purple in the pot. I agreed with her decision. It needed some purple counter balance the warmth of the yellow greens.  Two of my favorite things to paint in one place! How could I go wrong but to paint them.

For those of you who are wondering, I did not use a sponge to paint this one. I used... a couple of brushes. Yup. The Princeton Catalyst brushes were my tools of choice. I still adore them.

Succulent in the Mist

The fog that particular morning was dense in the area of the succulent gardens. I stayed on the familiar path, face to the ground and happened on this gossamer image.

Here's another exercise in edge control. This is a dry brush technique done with a bristle brush, swirled in a similar motion I would use to stencil. Paint is applied layer upon layer until the shape of a plant begins to form.

I'm happy you found my blog today.

Succulent Season

"Succulent Season"

Acrylic mixed media
Succulents, with their whorled profusion of thick, velvety leaves that unfurl into a full-blown swirl, like roses, cabbages and kale, give me a sense of satisfaction.

I'm finding out so much about myself by writing words to go with my paintings.  It's one thing to create with imges, but another still, to explain why. I taught myself to paint by teaching others. Formulating words to explain a process ingrains it into one's very being.

So many images, so little time.

Moons Over the Desert

"Moons Over the Desert"
10" x 10"
Acrylic mixed media
Certain parts of the world are privy to Dual Moonality.  Usually they're located in the deserts of continents that have deserts, but from my studio, I occasionally get peeks at places just like this painting.  I love being an artist!  It affords me such luxurious privileges.

This is one in a series of mixed media pieces I'll be posting over the next few days.  I painted the paper, tore it and shot the photos.  The leaf was in my yard, and I stenciled the decorative stuff with joint compound.  I repeat... I love being an artist.

Come back tomorrow for more fun stuff!
