Magnolia Study

Today's lesson at the workshop had to do with color and painting white flowers.  I opted to do mine with a palette knife and a silk magnolia, no less. Laura Robb uses a knife to get her crisp edges. So I used one to paint this study.  I learned how much I don't know about knife painting and how thankful I am that I've already established a style of my own.  Trying to paint like someone else is difficult. Trying to paint like Carol Keene is hard enough.

I'm thankful to be moved back into my studio, although it was a wonderful weekend of learning new things and revisiting concepts that are always good to review.  I'd recommend a Mainstreet Art Center workshop to anyone.  Thank you Frankie Johnson for making it possible.

Choppy Water

The storm hit and passed before I could leave, so I stayed and painted a couple more quick studies. The water lilies fared well; both blooms and their pads. Water rolled off the tops like they had been waxed, and then the sun came out.

Lily Lake became turbulent before my eyes.  She's normally like a mirror.  It was interesting to see her roil and settle again. This thirty-minute sketch was one of several I did that morning.

I appreciate your calm presence here.

Limes and Lace

"Limes and Lace"
6" x 6"
Oil on canvas panel
One week when limes were plentiful, I filled a crystal vase with them and had it ready to photograph on a piece of cut work lace. It seemed all too round, with the vase, the holes and a bunch of limes, so I cut into one.  Perfect.

This is a study to see if I can get the color for the limes right.  They look right in my studio light.  I'll work on the actual piece over the next few weeks.  The vase is going to be the hard part now. Although, I've painted it many times before.

Thank you for stopping by.
