Heavenly Hydrangea

"Heavenly Hydrangea"
8" x 10"
Pastel on gessoed canvas panel
The jewel tones of the hydrangeas caught my eye as I walked past buckets of them in my grocery store. I had my camera in my purse, so I clicked off a few shots.

I've painted these beauties before, but now I'm trying my hand at capturing the essence of this closeup with pastel painted on a black canvas panel. I applied clear gesso on it then dug in.

Antique Hydrangea

"Antique Hydrangea"
20" x 20"
Oil on wrapped canvas
I walked into the produce department of Whole Foods to buy cherries and watermelon, but walked out with three stems of hydrangeas instead. I tried not to fall in love, but I tumbled at the colorful petals, the texture, the massive heads.  I'll be painting these bad boys again!

Each head is a different color and every cluster of four petals is unique, too. I will have a lot of fun making art from my "fruit substitute."

Blue Lace Cap Hydrangea

"Blue Lace Cap Hydrangea"
12" x 12"
Oil on wrapped canvas
Blue lace caps in huge pots were placed in the middle of a reflecting pool at the Chicago Botanic Gardens. I was able to get close enough to reference many of them for the purpose of subject matter.

I'm haven't painted hydrangeas in a while, so when a block of time presented itself today, I decided to do it. I enjoyed painting each petal completely before moving on to the next one, starting with the darkest ones.  The leaves were a delight, too.

Thank you for looking.
