We're back at Daniel Wright Woods in late August here. I remember the noise that morning was from insects, not the rustle of leaves.  The sky reflected the deep periwinkle of the dome above me. It was a glorious day to photograph for later paintings, and a great one to paint en plein air.

I'm in a knife painting kind of mood. The dots and smears of color from the knife and the fast drying acrylic delights me. I love to paint layer upon layer on the dried textures.

Daniel Wright, Overcast

Autumn made an appearance at the woods today. For the most part, the trees and shrubs have settled into their final, seasonal selection of green, but one shrub had already tried on her fall attire. She wore it proudly, despite the warning that she'd also probably be the first to lose her fancy garb.

I sat at pond-side with my pastels on a small table next to me to capture the essence of the woods on this overcast day. One of my friends will be going back to Arizona, so this was his last hurrah for the season.

Daniel Wright Lilies

Daniel Wright offered a terrific variety of greens again today. But this week the waterlilies were visible from where I stood. I walked part way around the pond and found several other places where these aquatic ballerinas were pirouetting en masse.

The weather was, once again, perfect for our Sunday morning outing.  I'm getting a lot of practice painting clusters of trees.

Sunday morning was sunny, warm, clear and the only day in June my friends were free to paint en plein air with me. Ed and I dropped off my dog at the groomer on the way and met Alan in the parking lot of the forest preserve. Met him — for the first time! Just as I had met Ed for the first time last month when we painted together. We three chose subject matter near one another and painted a total of five paintings in about three hours. Storms darkened the afternoon skies, but by then we were each back to the normalcy of our own lives.
