Calla Curl

The spathe curls around her spike like she knows there is a big ice and snow storm decorating our zip code with crystalline ornaments. Tree branches are balancing snow flakes like stacks of white china plates on spidery networks of narrow shelves. It's February and we are getting our first REAL snow.

This is from the last of the photos I took in line at the grocery store checkout.  I'll find more callas and do a few more ... soon.

Spathe & Spike

The mostly white, singular petal of a calla lily is called a spathe. It lovingly wraps around the pistil, which in this species is called a spike. If you recall from past posts, I've admitted to being partial to petals that whorl, like rose and dahlia petals do. But this spathe puts a new spin on my affection for twirling petals.

Here is number two in my series of calla lilies. I love the subtle color changes, the sweeping curves and the sudden burst of colour.

C Lily

"C Lily"

Oil on wrapped canvas
My grocery store had bundles of "C Lilies" in buckets near the checkout. It was as if some little miss smarty pants couldn't decide which lilies they were — calla, canna, crinum or any other appropriate word that might suit these lavender beauties, so she called them "C."  I photographed several of them as I stood in line to pay for grapes.

It was fun to paint a flower again. I've been painting on a guitar for several days. It's finished now, so I'll post it in a day or two.  It's unlike anything I've posted here.
